What do weight loss drugs and Taylor Swift have in common? They both can move the GDP. From buying new clothes to hiring fitness trainers, people who have lost weight using GLP-1 drugs are moving the country’s GDP. Some effects are subtle – Rent the Runway’s clients are choosing smaller sizes. And some are obvious – fewer visits to fast food outlets. The Washington Post reports on this including a study by Cornell University and Numerator; and PricewaterhouseCoopers report on the economics of more exercise.
Science takes at guess at why women live longer than men. This is also true for other mammals, not just humans. The XX chromosomes in females may be part of the key but researchers cannot figure out why. Or it could be that men are more likely to work at dangerous jobs, be homeless, or in prison. The New York Times has a great article on it.
